ABOUT THE BEANS
Purple Rain is a beautifully complex coffee from the mountain village of Xiding in Menghai County, Yunnan. Expect delicate notes of rooibos tea, apple blossom and ume, with a bright, tea-like acidity and refined clarity. Grown at 1700m and processed using an extended anaerobic washed method, this coffee is elegant, expressive and exceptionally clean. It truly shines as espresso, where its structure and layered sweetness come to life.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Produced at the Xiding Washing Station, this lot undergoes a meticulous two-stage fermentation designed to enhance clarity and brightness. Fully ripe cherries are handpicked, washed in mountain spring water and dry-fermented before a carefully monitored secondary fermentation. The 72-hour process, followed by slow drying on raised beds, creates a coffee that is more complex and refined than traditional washed lots. Named after the Purple-Leaf varietal grown in the region, Purple Rain celebrates both exceptional quality and the distinctive purple hue of young coffee leaves in Xiding.
ABOUT THE ROASTER
This coffee is roasted by Elsewhere in Deptford, South East London. Since 2019, their small team has focused on sourcing vibrant, characterful coffees and roasting them to be approachable, balanced, and full of flavour.
More About Purple Rain
Anaerobic washed coffee is a modern processing method where the beans are fermented without oxygen before being washed and dried.
After harvesting, the coffee cherries (or sometimes pulped beans) are placed in sealed tanks to ferment in an oxygen-free environment. This controlled process enhances flavour development. The beans are then washed and dried like a traditional washed coffee.
What to expect in the cup:
Clean and structured like a washed coffee, but with more intensity and complexity—often showing bold fruit notes, sweetness, and sometimes wine-like or funky characteristics.
In short:
Clean and bright, with an extra layer of bold, complex flavour.
